BOARD OF TRUSTEES
The College is supported by a strong, experienced Board of Trustees who have a keen interest in the school, each contributing their wisdom, expertise and skills.
Our family has lived in Beach Haven since 1997, and we truly love this neighbourhood. We'd like to contribute to our community by helping families realise what fabulous schooling options are available locally. Both our children chose to enrol at Birkenhead College, and they are grateful for all the opportunities the school provides. They have thrived over the years in this stimulating and caring environment, with wonderful teachers and friends, and countless opportunities to participate in a range of activities. We've all been impressed with how much the teachers and students care about the school, and by the fact that ex-pupils come back to be involved as BOT members, tutors, coaches, or helpers at the school production.
The cornerstones I believe in are: excellence, integrity, and kindness. I know that a caring school can make all the difference to learning success and future achievement. My background is in mathematics and my profession is business analysis, both of which have given me strong problem solving skills. To the Board of Trustees, I bring my energy, enthusiasm and experience as a BOT member at Birkdale Intermediate, and a Health and Safety rep at NZTA. I joined the board because I wanted to give back something to our fantastic school and small community. It is a hugely fulfilling and enjoyable role, in which I’ve been privileged to work with a great group of mutually supportive people, dedicated to the success and wellbeing of every pupil.
Trevor Dobbin. MA (Hons), Dip Tchg
As the current Board Chairperson, I have been involved in all aspects of the governance of Birkenhead College. This experience and work on committees of the Board, and its predecessor, the Board of Governors, has given me a sound understanding of the role of trustees and tasks to be undertaken on the school’s behalf.
For many years I worked as a Senior Lecturer in the Faculty of Education at the University of Auckland and prior to that. Auckland College of Education, training teachers for secondary schools. This work, combined with earlier experience as a secondary teacher, has given me opportunities to see a variety of approaches to school organisation and ways of meeting different learning needs. As chairman I have overseen a number of ERO reviews of the college, culminating in its outstanding review in 2012.
In addition to a range of interests in education, I have had a long involvement in sport including rugby, cricket and athletics, and in several cultural activities. My general interests include building, car maintenance and tramping. I am married to Margaret. We have lived in this area since 1973 and our five children have attended Birkenhead College.
If re-elected to the Board of Trustees, I feel that I would bring a combination of experience in education and practical strategies for the ongoing development of the school.
Rick Nutter. Dip Tchg, Master of Business Administration
My wife Denise and I have been part of the Birkenhead Community since 1993. I have diverse and pragmatic experience garnered from roles in teaching, business ownership and corporate roles covering recruiting, training, learning and development, change management, together with business unit and general management including governance responsibilities.
Through supporting our boys’ involvement in BC, I see first-hand how our school’s programmes, and environment encourages personal development and individual responsibility across a wide range of students, that prepares them for adult life. BC has an excellent teaching staff and opportunities, and I would like to see the awareness of what it offers the wider community spread well beyond the school gates. It is a great ethos when past students genuinely stay in touch with current students which says a lot about the friendships and values that are formed and shape our community in general.
With the wider area’s great cultural diversity, our school is a rewarding central focal point for both students, staff and families alike. I am proud of what the school has to offer, and we enjoy the community in which we live. Most of all, I would like to be involved in and contribute to the future direction of Birkenhead College.
Samantha Beattie. BA/LLB
I am a former student of Birkenhead College. I believe that being a member of the Board of Trustees will enable me to support and give back to the school that gave me so many opportunities. I have lived locally since leaving school in 2008 and am proud of our community.
I have a BA/LLB from the University of Auckland. I am a lawyer with a particular specialisation in local government. I have strong communication and analytical skills that will enable me to advocate effectively for the school. My experience with local government processes will also be valuable in assisting the governance of BC.
I have a passion for ensuring every student leaves high school with an excellent education and experiences that will allow them to prosper. During my time at university I ran a ‘Law in Schools’ programme that endeavoured to inform high school students of their legal rights. I consider supplementing classroom education with such programmes is invaluable.
Outside of work I enjoy running, cycling and travelling. I also volunteer with the Auckland SPCA.
Thank you for considering to elect me as a trustee for Birkenhead College.
Hi, my name is Tracy Brooksbank and I would like your vote so I can be a parent representative on the Board of Trustees for Birkenhead College.
I am currently the Treasurer of the Birkenhead College Parent Support Group and I was a member of the Chelsea Primary PTA for many years
I am married with 2 children, Amy in year 11 at Birkenhead College and Sarah, currently at Birkdale Intermediate, moving to Birkenhead College next year. I am a Registered Nurse of 20 years and have worked for Waitemata District Health Board in a variety of nursing roles for 15 years. We have lived in the Birkenhead area for the last 18 years.
I believe children should be given the opportunity to attend local schools within the communities they are familiar with. Therefore I am interested in these local schools being the best they can be, helping to shape resilient and resourceful individuals.
Birkenhead College is a great school in a great community. A strong Board of Trustee is integral to this success.
