BOARD OF TRUSTEES
The College is supported by a strong, experienced Board of Trustees who have a keen interest in the school, each contributing their wisdom, expertise and skills.
David Cox, BE civil
I am married with three sons and have been living in Birkenhead for the last 16 years. Before moving back to the North Shore our family lived in Singapore for 7 years where I managed a construction company and upon returning in 2000 was employed for 5 years by Works Infrastructure Ltd as Auckland construction manager. For the last 10 years I have been self employed as a civil engineer managing a variety of construction and infrastructure projects throughout the Auckland region.
My two oldest boys have successfully completed their education at Birkenhead College and have now completed Architecture and Engineering degrees at Auckland University. My youngest son is currently attending the school in Year 13 and is enjoying his time at Birkenhead College. I have had a lot to do with all aspects of the school over the last 11 or 12 years as the boys have been involved in a variety of academic, sporting and musical activities.
I have been on the Board of Trustees for about 9 years and got to know most of the staff and management of the school during this time. My experience in the construction industry and also in management roles has allowed me to assist the school in a number of ways on the finance, discipline and property sub-committees. I believe I bring a practical view point to the Board and think I represent the views of a lot of parents and the wider community in my role.
Trevor Dobbin. MA (Hons), Dip Tchg
As the current Board Chairperson, I have been involved in all aspects of the governance of Birkenhead College. This experience and work on committees of the Board, and its predecessor, the Board of Governors, has given me a sound understanding of the role of trustees and tasks to be undertaken on the school’s behalf.
For many years I worked as a Senior Lecturer in the Faculty of Education at the University of Auckland and prior to that. Auckland College of Education, training teachers for secondary schools. This work, combined with earlier experience as a secondary teacher, has given me opportunities to see a variety of approaches to school organisation and ways of meeting different learning needs. As chairman I have overseen a number of ERO reviews of the college, culminating in its outstanding review in 2012.
In addition to a range of interests in education, I have had a long involvement in sport including rugby, cricket and athletics, and in several cultural activities. My general interests include building, car maintenance and tramping. I am married to Margaret. We have lived in this area since 1973 and our five children have attended Birkenhead College.
If re-elected to the Board of Trustees, I feel that I would bring a combination of experience in education and practical strategies for the ongoing development of the school.
Over the past 18 years my wife Merryn and I have lived in this fantastic community, which will continue to be home for many years to come.
I have had the privilege of serving on the Birkenhead College Board of Trustees for the last 9 years and have done so based on the support I want to give to the school, for all they have done for our girls. Not to mention all their friends who we have watched grow and excel through their time at BC. This is truly a community school that is committed to give our kids the best education they deserve.
With one daughter successfully through Birkenhead College, as well as university, we now have our youngest at BC. From their perspective I can say that BC has been a school they have huge respect for, in helping to set the foundation for their future learning.
As you can tell, like any parent, I am passionate about ensuring my children get the best education and I believe it is a right that every child has this opportunity.
I am a Business Director for a local company and if I can use my skills to help ensure that BC remains one of the best schools on the Shore then I am pleased to do so.
Samantha Beattie. BA/LLB
I am a former student of Birkenhead College. I believe that being a member of the Board of Trustees will enable me to support and give back to the school that gave me so many opportunities. I have lived locally since leaving school in 2008 and am proud of our community.
I have a BA/LLB from the University of Auckland. I am a lawyer with a particular specialisation in local government. I have strong communication and analytical skills that will enable me to advocate effectively for the school. My experience with local government processes will also be valuable in assisting the governance of BC.
I have a passion for ensuring every student leaves high school with an excellent education and experiences that will allow them to prosper. During my time at university I ran a ‘Law in Schools’ programme that endeavoured to inform high school students of their legal rights. I consider supplementing classroom education with such programmes is invaluable.
Outside of work I enjoy running, cycling and travelling. I also volunteer with the Auckland SPCA.
Thank you for considering to elect me as a trustee for Birkenhead College.
Hi, my name is Tracy Brooksbank and I would like your vote so I can be a parent representative on the Board of Trustees for Birkenhead College.
I am currently the Treasurer of the Birkenhead College Parent Support Group and I was a member of the Chelsea Primary PTA for many years
I am married with 2 children, Amy in year 11 at Birkenhead College and Sarah, currently at Birkdale Intermediate, moving to Birkenhead College next year. I am a Registered Nurse of 20 years and have worked for Waitemata District Health Board in a variety of nursing roles for 15 years. We have lived in the Birkenhead area for the last 18 years.
I believe children should be given the opportunity to attend local schools within the communities they are familiar with. Therefore I am interested in these local schools being the best they can be, helping to shape resilient and resourceful individuals.
Birkenhead College is a great school in a great community. A strong Board of Trustee is integral to this success.
