Science

Science is an increasingly important area of study as humanity grapples with a number of challenges around the world. Our students will be empowered to take ownership of their learning and develop the types of problem solving skills that will be needed by our future leaders. New Zealand has produced a disproportionately high number of important scientists and scientific discoveries and we believe in the ability of our students to be part of that Kiwi spirit.

At Birkenhead College we aim to provide an environment in which students’ curiosity may thrive and they see the impact they could have in the future should they choose a career in the Sciences. Students will come to appreciate that Science is as much about what we do not know as it is about what we do know. They will also learn the importance of making mistakes and learning from them along the way.

The Sciences at Birkenhead College are broadly divided into Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Earth & Space Science.

STEM Academy Science is a pathway for those junior students who are passionate about Science, have proven ability in the subject and are keen to have their learning extended. STEM will challenge students beyond the curriculum and link Science concepts to real-world applications on a regular basis. The programme allows students flexibility in their learning and offers opportunities for acceleration. All students will apply for entry to this course, as described in the link below.
