INTERNATIONAL DAY 2024

Always a day of festive and cultural fun, this year is no exception, even if it did rain - a lot! Well done to all students who got into the spirit of International Day and wore something that reflected a culture from around the world. And a big congratulations to all who worked hard to put on the annual Cultural Concert and organised the food stalls. What a great big team effort it is!

TOP DESIGN STUDENT

Last year, Rafabelle Bastida finished her Year 13 Design folio with an amazing result - having her final Design board selected to be part of the annual NZQA Top Art Exhibition 2024 (see an example of her work below). Top Art is an annual touring exhibition featuring a selection of NCEA Level 3 portfolios that achieved Excellence in Visual Arts in the previous year. It tours the entire country, so it is great that one of our BC students has work being seen far and wide. Click here to see the Design section of the exhibition - Rafabelle's work is 10th, so just click through using the NEXT button on the left.

MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

I want to update you all about our school mobile policy under the new National government. Students have been wonderful in keeping their phones in their bags during class. We will maintain this process, however there are additional government regulations that will come into effect in Term 2.

"Mobile phones are to be turned off and placed in bags before entry into school gates. Phones will not be used by students on site between 8:30am and 3:15pm (exit bell for the day signals the use of mobile phones for students). Mobile phones are to remain off and out of sight at all times. If phones are brought to school, they must be kept in the student's own school bag."

This means that students are not allowed to use their phones at interval and lunchtime either.

Cell phones may be used for a learning activity if directed to do so by a teacher. The teacher will supervise phone use, including when they may be used, what they may be used for, and when they need to be put away.

In matters related to a student’s immediate health and safety concerns, a parent or caregiver can apply to the principal for a period of exemption (e.g., medical conditions or child protection issues).

If parents or caregivers urgently need to contact their child, they should contact the school by phone 09 483 9039 or email office@birkenhead.school.nz

INTERNATIONAL HOST FAMILIES NEEDED

Birkenhead College is seeking local families to host International Students.

We are looking forward to hosting overseas students once again at the school. An integral part of their NZ stay is to live with a local family and participate in family life, which is an important aspect of the total student experience.

International students also offer valuable cultural interaction for you and your family - many families have made lifelong friends as a result of hosting!

Host families are asked to provide a room, three meals a day, Wi-Fi connection and to assist with transport from time to time, for which $300 per week will be paid. All members of the household aged 18 years and older are required to complete a Police Vet check via the school.

If you would like to know more, please contact: Nataliya Novak or phone 09 483 9039, Ext 838
