Visual Arts

Visual Arts at Birkenhead College sees students study a combination of painting, printmaking, sculpture, design and photography. We have excellent facilities that help to ensure our students' success, including darkrooms, a photographic studio and a digital lab equipped with Adobe Creative Cloud. The Visual Arts Department provides university approved subjects often looked for in tertiary applications.

Our students learn about Art and ideas by creating their own work. They are encouraged to look at a wide range of artists and artworks from different contexts and cultures, teaching them to think in critical, analytical and creative ways. Birkenhead College Art students frequently exhibit their work in local community exhibitions, and are encouraged to enter competitions such as  the APIX Photography Competition, Mairangi Bays Art Competition and Exhibition and the Wallace Secondary Schools Art Competition.

Art enriches our lives and provides us with the means to express ourselves visually, building confidence and positivity in our students.
