The Department of Mathematics at Birkenhead College has an excellent reputation. Our staff include teachers who are known for high-quality teaching, and we have a strong focus on student wellbeing and achievement. Our department is particularly recognised for the collaboration between staff and senior students, who make themselves available for lunchtime, after school and individualised tuition for students of all year levels, not only at our school but also for our local intermediate school.
At Birkenhead College, we cultivate Mathematics pathways for everyone to succeed and gain NCEA qualifications. We pride ourselves on making every single student successful in their maths career, whether maths is a student’s strongest subject or their least favourite.
Maths is such a well-liked and successful subject at Birkenhead College that 90% of students at Birkenhead College take maths through to Level 3 and successfully gain University Entrance.
STEM Academy is a pathway for those students who are passionate about Maths, have proven ability in the subject and are keen to have their learning extended. STEM will challenge students beyond the curriculum and link Maths concepts to real-world applications on a regular basis. The programme allows students flexibility in their learning and offers opportunities for acceleration. All students will apply for entry to these courses, as described in the presentation below.
