Languages

Birkenhead College offers our students some excellent language and culture classes in French and Māori

Being able to speak another language provides students with a true sense of being part of the global community. Increased communication skills and intercultural competence equip our students for study and work overseas or employment in our own increasingly diverse community.

Birkenhead College students are encouraged to explore the whole culture of the language they choose to study, enriching their knowledge and experience of another value system. Senior courses cover the four main language skills of Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening, and extends the language and culture experienced in Years 9 and 10. There is a shift in language use from survival skills to social competence and interaction on matters of daily importance such as travel, family, interests and friendships. Students will be able to communicate information, ideas and opinions on practical matters in the past, present, and future tenses.
