English Language (ESOL)

Studying English in the English Language Department will enable English Language learners to feel confident in learning and using the English language. This, in turn, will promote the consistent use of English both inside and outside the classroom.

In addition, students will have the opportunity to become familiar with native speaker speech and the strategies for coping with it both in and outside the classroom. English Language also aims to prepare our students to be able to function comfortably in mainstream classes.

Students progress through four levels: EL1A, EL2A, EAP1, EAP2. Each level builds on the previous knowledge gained by the students. For example, in EL1A students are taught how to write simple sentences using the first thousand words of vocabulary. When they reach EAP2 students should be able to write 500 word essays of different genres, including discursive, compare and contrast and expository.
