Birkenhead
College (known initially as Birkdale College) is a state co-educational
secondary school which opened in February 1972 with a starting roll of
190 Form 3 students.
The school was officially opened by Sir Dennis Blundell, Governor-General
in February 1973.
The residential growth of the surrounding area grew the student roll to
1169 and 71 teachers in 1982. The early developmental years firmly established
a culture that expected each person in the school to gain the highest
qualifications possible and to treat others with kindness, consideration
and respect.
Today those basic expectations have not changed.
Mr Brian Gerrard, the foundation principal retired in 1986.
Mr Jim Mathewson has been principal from1986 until today.
